PHOENIX, Oregon- Building off of a 2nd place finish in the Skyline Conference and a 3rd place finish at the Districts;  Phoenix Wrestling is continuing to climb towards the top as far as top caliber teams in the state of Oregon go. Phoenix currently has 7 male wrestlers ranked in the preseason 4A Oregon State ranking polls, and the returning State Champion in the Girl’s Division.

The Pirates are led by a large field of seniors and returning state qualifiers:

  • Micheal Walker (Jr.)- State Qualifier

  • Ryan Brumble (Jr.)- State Qualifier

  • Jacky Hawkins (Sr.)- 2x State Qualifier, Ranked #9 in the State

  • Elijah Galatioto (Sr.) State Qualifier, Ranked #8 in the State

  • Dane Johnson (Sr.)- State Qualifier, Ranked #3 in the State

  • Dalton Samis (Sr.)- 2x State Qualifier, Ranked #1 in the State

  • Emma Truex (Jr.)- 2x State Champion, Ranked #1 in the State

The Pirates are led by #1 Ranked Dalton Samis, who is the highest ranked wrestler in the boy’s division of this group. Samis was 3rd place at the Special District 3 tournament last year which boasted the 4A State Champion, and finished (1-2) at the state meet.  Samis will be joined by his younger brother, Colton Samis. Colton is a promising freshman who is coming off a SOMSAC championship in middle school last season, and is highly recognized as one of the top incoming freshmen in the state

The family affair doesn’t stop there. Ezra Deluca, who is brother of 3x State Champion Eleazar Deluca and 2015 Girls State Champion, Nevina Deluca comes in ranked #7 in the state. Deluca was last year’s “Mr. Takedown” with 69 takedowns on the season. Deluca has worked hard all summer and plans to continue his success through his senior year.  Dane Johnson, who is brother of current SOU wrestler and 2x State Medalist for the Pirates (Cedrus King), is looking to make his way to the podium this year. Johnson is a returning state qualifier who has taken the role of a team leader. Johnson embraces hard work, and we all know...like Coach Mondale said, 'The hardest workers are the most successful".

Jacky Hawkins, who has now qualified for the state tournament twice, is ready to make an appearance on the podium at the state tournament this year. Hawkins had an injury riddled season in his Jr Season. He came in with about a month of practice to qualify for the state tournament. We are very excited to see what he can accomplish with a full season of training this year.

Elijah Santana, who is the teams returning Pin & Win leader comes in ranked #3 in the state. Elijah Santana has improved drastically over his career as a Pirate. His freshmen season he was 1-9. This past season; as a junior, he led the team in wins  (40 wins) and pins (26 falls).

Emma Truex, our returning 2x Girls State champion also comes in off an All-American post season at the Reno Worlds. Emma is looking to defend her throne again this season and to continue to etch her name is Oregon wrestling history.

The team’s new comers, Colton Samis (previously mentioned) and Joey Baynard are expected to come make noise in the state right away. These two have been apart of this program for years, and have wrestled on some of the biggest stages this state and country have to offer. Baynard is coming off a Middle School state medal. With the amount of work they have put in this spring and summer, they should make an immediate impact for the Pirates.

Come catch the Pirates kickoff this season! You can catch them at home on November 30th at the Harry Mondale Invitational which will begin at 10:00AM.
